Life As a Semi-Retired Inspirational Dog Begins

Yesterday I announced the official beginning of my semi-retirement, so as you can see today I jumped right into my new part time "job." It's tough being a dog lounging around in my mom's writing studio as she clicks away on the keyboard. But I do think I'm up for the challenge. ARF!

Have no fear though, I am still doing appearances and would love to visit your school or library- just be sure to get on my calendar early as my mom is making sure I live a balanced life. Good Mom.

Frankie the Walk 'N Roll Dog Announces Her Semi-Retirement

Happy 2012! As the New Year kicks off I am finding more time for rest and relaxation and officially announce my semi-retirement. Here I am below in the big wicker chair in my mom's writing studio... snoozing and catching glimpses out the window. How I love to watch the world go by...

I'm grateful to my mom for understanding I wish to slow down a little bit now that I am twelve. Can you believe it has been five years since I began sharing my story? How time flies! But I look forward to meeting new kids this year too. Be sure to get on my calendar early in you'd like me to visit your school is Wisconsin because I'll be doing limited visits. I am also still doing Skype visits and booking now for those as well, so please contact us to book an in-person or Skype visit.

My therapy dog work will continue visiting Libby's House and Hospice, as long as I am comfortable in doing so my mom says. So far so good, so will look forward to seeing all my friends when I visit.

Salinan finds niche in making dog magnets

For Salinan Brianna Lennox, the attraction to dogs is magnetic.Lennox, 26, has successfully combined her whimsical artistic style and love of dogs into a home-based business that ensures her creature creations are on refrigerator doors and other metal surfaces all over the world.
In Salina, the magnets are for sale at two locations downtown -- the Toy Parade, 119 S. Santa Fe, and Ad Astra Books and Coffee House, 141 N. Santa Fe.
"It turns out people really love dogs," Lennox said Wednesday. "Everybody has a big soft spot in their heart right where that pet is."
The creator of Silly Dog Magnets, Lennox made her first set of magnets out of pictures she drew of Chinese Crested dogs in 2008.
At the time, she was managing CD TradePost and, in her spare time, had begun experimentally offering an array of handmade items for sale online at a website called etsy.com, which bills itself as the world's handmade marketplace.
Swedish not selling
Lennox said her Dala horses, Viking finger puppets and other items weren't finding enough buyers to replace the income from her day job.
It wasn't until she posted the Chinese Crested dog magnets that she found she had something that would sell.
"I started making random things until I found my niche," she said. "My niche turned out to be dog magnets."
A Lindsborg native, Lennox attended Salina Area Technical College for training in commercial art. She also worked previously as a gallery attendant for the Salina Art Center. She said she learned her love of dogs from her mother, who worked as a dog groomer.
Lennox started to draw more dog breeds, and the colorful magnets quickly took off online. She developed her own Web site at sillydogmagnets.com, and the business continues to grow. In the past couple of years, her magnets have been featured in the magazines Modern Dog, City Dog and Tails.
This spring, she left CD TradePost to devote herself full-time to her magnetic canine creations -- and to her real canine, Billie Bumbler, her 2-year-old dapple dachshund.
"I love it," Lennox said. "It's so fantastic. It frees me up a lot of time for me to spoil my dog rotten, which is what I do in my spare time."
Billie, who can weave through Lennox's legs and leap into the air on cue, has learned an impressive array of tricks now that Lennox is home more. Lennox calls Billie her "inspiration and quality control."
"I refer to myself as the CEO and her as the DOL, which stands for 'Dog on Lap'," Lennox said. "You can't have a dog magnet business without a mascot."
Lennox may not be a Salinan much longer. She has her house on the market and plans to relocate to Omaha, Neb. Her business is portable, she said.
Lennox creates her drawings with artist-quality markers, then has them professionally copied. She cuts the copies into a circle with a press in her office, then presses the picture into a button maker.
Instead of a pin, she glues a magnet on the back, mounts her creations on a display card, and they are ready to ship.
On Wednesday, 100 freshly glued magnets were drying on the counter. They had been ordered by a couple of dog lovers who were getting married and planned to give any cash wedding gifts to a dog charity, Lennox said. The couple ordered the magnets to give to wedding guests.
Lennox said she has had the opportunity to work on projects for several breed rescue organizations, and she has created custom work for various fundraising projects -- including magnets of Sparkles the fire safety dog and Frankie, the walk 'n' roll dog, a dog who makes presentations about living with disabilities. She has even created ribbons for wiener dog races.
"That's the beauty of a handmade product," she said. "A lot of times it's customizable, too."
Lennox's boyfriend, Candy Pacheco, helps with the magnet production process and fulfillment of online orders, which are usually shipped within 48 hours.
"You know business is good when the guys at the post office know you by name," she said.
Lennox said that in 2011 she sold more than 5,000 sets of six dog magnets, which easily doubled the amount she sold the previous year.
She has about 50 different dog breeds represented in her collections, and she said she intends to keep adding a new breed every couple of weeks, "just to keep things fresh."
She also has one cat set.
"It's not that we don't like cats; it's just that my business is silly dogs," she said.
She said she doesn't think she'll do a "mutt" collection, but she does custom work. She charges $34.99 for one customized portrait of a dog and a set of six magnets, which can be ordered through her Web site.
Of course, her favorite -- and her best seller -- is the dachshund, which takes two magnets to depict -- one for the front half and one for the hind quarters. She has dachshunds dressed in Halloween costumes, wearing sweaters and party attire, and riding in wheelchairs.
Lennox said that with most of her business being online, she doesn't get a lot of feedback, which makes the contacts she does receive special. She said the biggest fan she is aware of is a 10-year-old girl in Colorado who asks for her magnets for birthdays and Christmases and has sent her letters and her own dog drawings.
"I love getting letters from people who say I captured one of their dogs in my drawings," she said. "It makes my day."

1st grader got Frankie's Positive Message in a Beautiful Way

Recently I visited first graders at Longfellow Elementary school in Wisconsin. As many of you know part of my story is to help encourage children to be positive even when facing challenges.

After my mom was done sharing my story and the kids settled in for reading time, as we packed up, one little girl asked the teacher if she could go to her locker. She said she had something for me. She ran to her locker and came bounding back in the room with a big smile, handed it to my mom and said, "This is for Frankie!"

The teacher noticed what she gave me and told my mom and me that the kids get these "passes" when they do good things. They then get to turn those in for chances at prizes each month. To think she gave up a chance to share her positive pass with me that would mean she might not win a prize is so special for so many reasons. It's one of the bestest gifts I have ever gotten!

Meet Digby Who Has IVDD and a Doggie Wheelchair Just Like Me

Digby's mom, Emily emailed my mom asking if she would be upset if she shared a video she made of Digby her dachshund with IVDD to help bring positive awareness to this disease to those to in the UK where she and Digby live. She told my mom she used the same music and was inspired by Frankie and the video about me. Emily didn't want my mom to be upset that the video is similar... stay tuned until end for Digby's touching video.

It was so nice of Emily to be concerned, but of course not, my mom was not upset at all. Wow- the more of us who share our stories, she told Emily, the more dogs we can save who are diagnosed with IVDD. This is a beautiful thing!

So my mom told Emily, "Send the video on over and I'll share with Frankie's fans!" So check out Digby, living a quality life despite an IVDD diagnoses. Could he be any happier? Thank you, Emily and Digby for this video that will be another extension of our work that will no doubt save more lives.

Another Wheelie Dog in Town!

There's a new wheelie dog in town! Well at least in the town over from me. Her name is Kahlua or a.k.a. Miss Lu or Tink. She was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor August 25th. She was given two months to live. Yup, count it out on your fingers, Christmas Day will be four months since her diagnoses. She is still pretty much the same, though her mom feels somewhat improved. Hot diggity dog!

Because of the brain tumor this has affected her back legs and walking. Kahlua's mom knows me and my mom well since she makes all our Frankie t-shirts and tote bags. So she knew getting Miss Lu a wheelchair was a viable option.

Miss Lu stopped over today to show us her new wheels from Eddie's Wheels! Weeeeeeee..... she is still adjusting to them, but we hope in no time she will be buzzing around fast as a speeding bullet.

As far as her brain tumor, well we continue to pray for her and ask if you could send a little prayer to the big guy upstairs too. She's a miracle so far with almost outliving her 2 month prognosis. We love you, Kahlua!

Poor, Poor Frankie... Does No one Want Her?

Here I am in my kennel, where sometimes I have to hang out when Mom and Papa eat dinner. Ok, so this usually happens when I sit on the floor and whine, so I am "sent to my room." So then I try my "oh poor rescue dog needs a home" look by putting my snout through the opening. You guessed it- that does not work either. But hey, you can't blame a little dog for tryin' right?

Daniel the Beagle-Miracle Dog Fighting to End Pet Gas Chambers

I was shocked to learn that 30 states use gas chambers to kill dogs that are up for adoption at shelters, but are not adopted. I did not know this barbaric practice was in place. Daniel the beagle was one of those dogs put in a gas chamber with 17 other dogs. When the door was opened, Daniel walked out. His tail was wagging.

A vet explained that there could have been an air pocket that helped Daniel escape the gas. We can try and find a reason that makes sense to our human minds, but I believe without a doubt that something bigger was at work that Daniel walked away-- full of life-- with a very important mission and message to share.

I was delighted when I learned that Daniel was adopted by my friend Joe Dwyer. Joe is a man of deep compassion for animals-- Daniel and Joe were meant to have found each other-- no doubt what-so-ever in my mind.

I spoke with Joe today and his first and foremost concern is Daniel's well being- to ensure he gets to be a dog with lots of playing time, enjoying his new family, and plenty of down time to just be a dog. It is one of the biggest things I appreciate and admire about Joe- his devotion to our furry companions and their well being. Second, he knows Daniel is a miracle and the message to outlaw gas chambers is a very needed and important one. He and Daniel are working hard to put into place "Daniel's Law" in Pennsylvania that will end this awful practice.... and hopefully all other 30 states will follow.

You can help Joe and Daniel spread the word just like we are doing. Share on your blog if you have one, share on Facebook, Twitter, wherever you can. Awareness brings positive changes. Every little bit helps.

No dog should ever, ever have to die in this way. They are living, breathing beings that deserve so much more. As it says on his website, "Adoption is the answer." So share his story where you can... I can assure you Daniel's tail will wag for your efforts. And all the dogs that will be adopted because of Daniel's story will thank you with complete love and devotion to you till the end of their time here on earth.

Frankie Surprises Young Boy for his 11th Birthday

Last Saturday Frankie and I surprised a very special young boy named Brandon for his 11th birthday. I had visited his school the year before. Brandon's mom called my mom awhile back and asked if there was any way we could stop by and surprise Brandon for his birthday party. She told us that Brandon talks about me all the time. I was quite flattered. ARF!

So last Saturday, Mom and I drove to Fond du Lac which is about 30 minutes from where we live. Brandon and his friends were out in the backyard playing. Brandon's mom, Tricia instructed us to go into the garage where tables and snacks were set up for the boys.

One of the mom's yelled out the back garage service door that it was time to come into the garage. She said, "Brandon, your surprise is here!" Keeping the door closed most of the way until all the boys were outside it, my mom and I waited patiently.

The door then opened and Brandon was in front of all his friends. His mom said, "Surprise, Brandon! Look whose here!" Brandon was looking up and all over... and ahem, I happen to be quite short, so he wasn't looking down. My mom pointed to the ground and said, "Brandon, look down."

When Brandon looked down and saw me his mouth opened wide and his eyes grew big as saucers! He ran right over to me, stooped down and started to pet me. He didn't really say anything, but I could see he was surprised. He then sat down on the garage stoop. His mom said, "Brandon, do you have tears in your eyes?" He said, "I'm so happy Frankie is here!"

I'm telling Brandon a secret... but it's a secret so it's only between Brandon and me!

So this was a gift for Brandon for his birthday, but I have to say.... my little doggie heart grew three times its size in that moment realizing how thrilled Brandon was to have me there.

His friends were all very cool and fun- everyone taking turns petting me. It was the best! Brandon told my mom two times how much he likes the book about me. Awww gosh, that made us blush!

Brandon didn't want me to leave, but after about 45 minutes it was time for a well deserved doggie nap for me. Brandon said to my mom, "Can I walk her to your car?" My mom said, "Of course you can. And you can even put Frankie in her doggie car seat for me."

Brandon did just that and then hugged me and hugged me. What a wonderful young man. He is going to make a great doggie care taker some day- I just know it.

Special Needs Pet Feature: Kaylee

What is your pet's name?

Kaylee

How old is your pet?

Kaylee is about 7 years old.

Where did you get your pet?

We adopted Kaylee from Remember Me Ranch Rescue, Baraboo, WI in June of 2011, where she had been since February 2011

What is your pet's physical challenge?

Kaylee was hit by a car about three years ago, and her previous owners failed to seek medical treatment. She has a spinal cord injury at her thoraco-lumbar junction resulting in severe sensory deficits and muscle wasting in her rear legs. Her X-rays show subluxation of the left hip which could either be from the car accident, or possibly hip dysplasia. She isn’t always quite sure where that left leg is! Happily, after a few months of rehab, her prognosis is much better than we ever expected. At the rehab clinic, Kaylee walks perfectly on an underwater treadmill and gets laser treatments to reduce inflammation and pain. She also has lots of exercises and stretches at home to build strength and decrease her sensory deficits. She has gone from crawling 90% of the time to walking 90% of the time in just four months.

What is your pet's favorite thing to do?

Kaylee’s favorite thing is to be involved with anything her family is doing. She is delighted to go on car rides when we run errands, be in the yard while I’m gardening, or just curl up and watch TV. It must have broken her heart to be cast outside and ignored by her previous family.

What is your pet's favorite thing to eat?

Kaylee loves the dried liver treats she gets at her rehab clinic. They are a good distraction during exams and an excellent motivator during exercises.

What do you love most about your pet?

Just looking at Kaylee makes me smile. Even with all of the challenges and neglect Kaylee has faced, she still embraces life to the fullest. And that is a good lesson for all of us!

What has your pet most taught you?

Kaylee is the perfect example of how resilient rescue dogs can be. After being tied out and ignored for three years with her crippling injury and additional medical problems (embedded collar, Lyme Disease, UTI, and rotting teeth), Kaylee radiates joy and love. I’m so lucky to be her mom!

Anything else you’d like to share?

I’ve made it my mission to seek out senior and special needs pets to adopt from shelters and rescues. I know these animals will wait the longest to find homes—if they ever find one at all. And I’ve never been disappointed—being a “rescue mom” has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.

When my mom and I got an email from Dona of Dachshund Resuce of North America about this dear little girl, our heart's broke for what happened to her. We are so thankful though that Dona got her out of her horrible situation so she can find a new home with people who love her. My mom, Barbara Techel and I love doing author visits to schools in our state of Wisconsin (we also do Skype visits!) Sharing my PAWSitive message with students is very rewarding! Today I am very excited to be visiting the 2nd and 6th grade students of Jefferson Elementary school.

When my mom and I started visiting schools almost 4 years ago, Jefferson Elementary was one of the first schools we visited. At the time the 6th graders were in 2nd grade. So now I get to see them once again and share updates about what I've been up to (like my therapy dog work which my mom wrote about in my newest book, Frankie the Walk 'N Roll Therapy Dog Visits Libby's House.)

And to top off what is already going to be a special day, one of the parents generously paid for a copy of each of my books to be given to each 2nd and 6th grade student. How arf-a-roo wonderful is that?!?? My mom and I were very, very touched.

As I read about the bond between children and pets in "Animals and the Kids Who Love Them" I felt my heart ooze with joy as tears streamed down my face. In a world, that at times, can be full of heartache and uncertainty, I often wonder about the future of our children.

Reading this book, I found hope in the creatures that God created who are helping to shape the lives of our young generation- animals who provide comfort, unconditional love, and a safe place for kids to just be themselves. It gave me hope that as long as we continue to respect and honor that bond, and allow it to work its magic, that there is always hope for our children's futures.

I am in awe and gratitude for the countless number of people who give of their time and dedication to bring children together with animals, giving them experiences they may have never gotten. Enriching their lives through loving a furry pal who they can share all their secrets with, and who will never judge them.

I've personally witnessed the profound magic that can happen between a child and an animal as the mom to Frankie the Walk `N Roll Dog, my special needs pet, and her close bond with a special needs little boy named Jackson(featured in the book). As I read the other stories in this book, I felt a soulful connection with each of the people who have had the distinct honor of seeing that same amazing bond- there is nothing quite like it.

Special Needs Pet Feature: Selianka

What is your pet's name?
My pet’s name is Selianka, which supposedly means “a little girl from the town” in the Romanian/Croatian language.

How old is your pet?

Selianka is 2 ½ years old.

Where did you get your pet?
I was whelping her mother at my house on March 14, 2009, but at 1am, I knew something was wrong, so I drove to the Dog Hospital in our city, and around 2am she was born via C-Section. She has one live brother. Two siblings were stillborn.

What is your pet's physical challenge?

She is so very small. She was 4.5 ounces at birth, and she grew properly until she was 5 weeks old. Then she slowed down, and at 14 weeks of age, she weighed 2 pounds, while her brother weighed in at 5 pounds. When she was 6 months old, she got very sick, and was in the Dog Hospital for 10 days. They finally found that she had a liver shunt, and were able to operate and save her life. Selianka now weighs 3 pounds and she is a pretty, long legged little girl, with a height of 8 inches. She is doing fine in the house and our fenced in back yard, but when we are out on the town, she must be carried, so she does not get stepped on by passers by. She is very nervous in large people crowds if she is on the ground.

What is your pet's favorite thing to do?

Play with her Russian Toy dog pals in the yard, chase the black Lab next door (on the other side of the fence). Chase other kritters in the yard. AND she loves to sort clean laundry. Watch video.

What is your pet's favorite thing to eat?
People food. We are very careful not to feed her “bad” food from our plates. But she gets a tiny piece of cheese with breakfast. And she loves the tiny, tiny pieces of chicken or duck jerky for midday snack. Being a Russian Toy dog, and with her small size, she can suffer from low blood sugar. We feed her in the morning and at dinner time. Then she getsa very small snack midday, and before bed time.

What do you love most about your pet?

Her impishness, spunk and beauty is what I love the most. Although she was born with a liver shunt, most Russian Toys are quite healthy.

What has your pet most taught you?

To be very gentle and kind to her. With her small size and light weight, it is easy to hoist her up in the air, or swirl/twirl her around. She does not appreciate that. She has also taught me that just because she is so small, it does not mean that she thinks she is small…oh no…in her mind she is a large dog, with a large dogs power. So she really needs to be protected from large vicious dogs, or she can be their snack. I am also in the yard with her at all times. She is no larger than a squirrel, and the hawk, fox or coyote can easily grab her for a meal.

Special Needs Pet Feature: Gus

What is your pet's name?
Gus

How old is your pet?
14

Where did you get your pet?
I was there the day he was born. Friends of mine had both of the parents on their ranch. The sire was a papered heeler and the bitch was not but she was a heeler as well. So I call Gus a pure-bred but not well-bred heeler. All my animals are rescues so I don’t care whether he is a pure-bred or not. The dogs were bred for herding purposes but he was really shy and only liked me so I was the lucky one to get him.

What is your pet's physical challenge?
He went blind at age 11 from cataracts so I had surgery done on one eye which brought his sight back. Then two years later when he was 13 he got glaucoma in his good eye and went blind again. There wasn’t anything further we could do surgically due to his age so we control pain management with four eye drops twice a day.

What is your pet's favorite thing to do?
Hang out with me; go to the park and car rides. He would play tennis ball for hours until he went blind.

What is your pet's favorite thing to eat?
He loves his premium dog food and biscuit snacks and the occasional meat scraps. Of course, we would eat most anything tasty if I would let him.

What do you love most about your pet?
He is loyal and smart and has put all his trust in me since he went blind. He never questions my voice commands and will even step off a curb without hesitation when we are walking. He has no idea whether it’s a 100 foot drop or just a few inches. He doesn’t fear the unknown because he trusts me so much. I am his “seeing-eye person”.

What has your pet most taught you?
Un-conditional love.

Anything else you’d like to share?
I cherish every day that I have with Gus because at 14 I know I probably don’t have a lot of time left with him. I love the breed and will go to a local heeler rescue organization to adopt when Gus crosses the rainbow bridge.

Yup, that's me in the front row as the director of the WI Humane Society is introduction author Jon Katz(my mom is next to me putting her books under her chair).

A few years ago I was fortunate enough to see Jon in Milwaukee also and sat right in the front row... and I was just as excited to be in the front row once again.

I thought it would be sad when he talked about pet grief, but I actually walked out of the talk feeling lighter and even more grateful for life and death. Jon has a wonderful sense of humor and shared some funny stories with us before touching on the subject of the death of our beloved pets.

One question an audience member asked was if Jon would address the subject of how we tell a child about the death of a pet. I appreciated his answer as he said, "Don't lie to your child." He said in his research he talked with many adults who still had resentment towards their parents for not telling them about the death of an animal when they were a child. He talked about making a special photo album with your child of the pet, or perhaps a memorial service to help your child.

He shared with us that each of his dogs have taught him something in his life- something he needed to learn at the time. Tears sprang to my eyes as he said that as I could relate, as I think so many of us can.

One important thing I felt he shared was that no one knows our pets better than we do. Only we can do what we feel is best when a pet is diagnosed with a terminal illness or when it is time to euthanize them. He said so many people feel so much guilt over this, but they shouldn't. Yes, it is one of the hardest things we have to do, but he said an animal does not fear death, nor do they worry about it. They come into the world when they need to and then leave when it is their time.

He does not feel their is a heaven for pets... but I'm not so sure about that one. Though I understood what he was saying. I want there to be a heaven where our pets are there waiting for us, but do I know that 100% for sure? No, I don't. But when I lose a pet, it is what helps get me through my grieving process believing I will see them again some day.

So in honor of all the pets that gone before us I am giving away a copy of Jon's new book, which is autographed by Jon.

To date, LuAnn and Sophie have done over 100 fashion shows for the elderly. They do this as a way of giving back and bringing joy to the lives of others.

Special Needs Pet Feature: O'Bannon Phillip

Where did you get your pet?
Animal Friends, Pittsburgh, PA

What is your pet's physical challenge?
O’Bannon has a hearing impairment from having bi lateral Total Ear Canal Ablations (TECA) performed. When we adopted him they told us he was basically deaf. We have learned that he has more “selective” hearing than anything else. O’Bannon also suffers from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) after being rescued by Animal Friends’ Humane Officers where they found him and others in a horrific scene. Multiple Pit Bulls were caged in crates in a dark basement or tied outside with thick chains. Many showed signs of physical injury, some needing emergency surgery. All showed signs of emotional distress.

Though, it wasn’t until the O’Pits (as they were all given a name that started with an “O”) were adopted into homes that they really showed signs of the PTSD. Many, if not all of them, including O’Bannon, had never lived inside a house. The simple act of turning on and off lights sent him cowering and running from the room. He was afraid to go down steps or walk down hallways. He still struggles mentally to build up the courage to come to us if we are at one end of the hall and he is at the other. He is still quite paranoid in certain situations, always looking over his shoulder and looking around as if he is waiting for something bad to happen.

What is your pet's favorite thing to do?
O’Bannon loves laying outside in the sunshine and playing with his sister Sylvie.

What is your pet's favorite thing to eat?
Can we have some extra paper to list everything? O’Bannon especially enjoys potatoes and pot roast. He really enjoys cheese as an extra treat.

What do you love most about your pet?
His courage to wake up each day with a happy demeanor and give it his best even though throughout the day his courage will be tested. We just love his spirit and the joy he brings by simply watching him interact with his furry siblings, Bruizer, Sylvie and Mani or laying in his recliner.

What has your pet most taught you?
O’Bannon has taught us that one of the most precious gifts is the gift of safety. When we think back to his condition when he first came home and compare it to his behavior now, we see little acts every day which shows he feels safe more and more. People often take the feeling of safety for granted. People, for the most part, have the ability to take precautions or to change our behavior to ensure our safety. Dogs do not completely have that ability and are dependent upon us to provide them with an environment of care and comfort. O’Bannon appreciates the care and comfort everyone has given him since the day he was rescued. And he has reciprocates and showers us with care and comfort every time his little face looks up at us.
Also, it is so important not to dismiss an animal with a special need. Often times, they are no more work than pets without special needs and are sometimes so much more rewarding.

Anything else you’d like to share?
We were so inspired by O’Bannon’s ability to trust and love others, his loyalty, gentleness and courage that it was only right to make him the mascot of our law firm. We used his image and likeness with his bright red collar as our logo because he embodies all of the qualities we hope to provide to our clients. He has his own Facebook page where he likes to blog and keep in touch with all of the wonderful people who saved his life and took care of him while he was waiting for us to find him.

All my pets are adopted and they have been so good to "teach" Lilly. They are so patient with her and they don't seem to mind her following them around. The vet said she needed her own hearing/seeing dogs to teach her and that has been so helpful.

Responsible Dog Ownership Day- Sheboygan Falls, WI- September 17th, 2011

September is Responsible Dog Ownership month set forth by the American Kennel Clubwhich encourages dog clubs arcoos the US to set aside a day to promote responsible dog ownership.
Hyper Tails Agility Club will be hosting a Responsible Pet Ownership Day event thisSaturday, September 17th from 9:00a-5:00p with many fun activities planned. Frankie the Walk 'N Roll Dog and I are honored to be taking part in this event with a special book signing from 11:00a-1:00p. Our special and dear friends, LuAnn and Sophie will also be there. Sophie is a petite Yorkshire Terrier who does the cutest fashion shows, having brought joy to many a nursing home and special events.

We are going to be having Rescue groups such as White Paws Rescue, Bichon Rescue, Two Left Paws Mobile Adoption Event, Lakeshore Bully Club representing themselves; we are going to have services such as dog sitters, dog groomers, dog massage, dog boarding kennels to look at; we are going to have demonstrations for hunting and flyball from "Dawgs in Motion" through Saukville and our own agility demonstrations, along with a band, DJ and food! We are also having a raffle! Dogs are welcome to come out and we are also doing Canine Good Citizen testing! Come one, come all! Special Needs Pet Feature: Squeaky

Note: Be sure to read all the way to end and then listen to a special audio recording my mom did. Squeaky's mom, Sussie wrote to us about Squeaky's first time in wheels and it was so cute we asked we could record and share with you, our readers.

What is your pet's name?
Squeaky. Actualy his name is Colt. But he gets these high pitched squeaky whines when he wants something. I started out saying to him “Thats my squeaky boy” but he seemed to like being called Squeaky. The only time I call him Colt is when he is in trouble. Kinda like when your mother called you by your full name. Oh boy...you knew you were in for it. LOL

How old is your pet?

Where did you get your pet?
He was a rescue. He was going to be put down.

What is your pet's physical challenge?
He is down in the back and it is inoperable (IVDD). Very powerful from the mid section forward though. Since I got him, he has regained a tiny bit of movement in the back. But not enough to stand.

What is your pet's favorite thing to do?
Chew on rawhide bones. Bark. Be held. Explore. Sleep.

What is your pet's favorite thing to eat?
um...what doesn't he like to eat. LOL

What do you love most about your pet?
His attitude. He has never been bothered by the fact that he can't walk. He's always happy.

What has your pet most taught you?
Don't worry...be happy.

This is the first in a new series that I have written for all animal lovers!

INTRODUCTION

My life transitioned when my chocolate Labrador, Cassie, was diagnosed with terminal bone cancer in late 2004.

Watching Cassie live each day with the same joy she always had, even with cancer, made me yearn for more joy in my own life. Because of Cassie, I took a three-month hiatus from my small business, to work with a life coach, and think about what I truly wanted for myself. What would bring me more happiness? I wondered.

From that sabbatical, I discovered how deeply I truly love animals. I decided to become a writer so I could share my love of animals with others, the many lessons I believe they teach us, and all the joy they bring to our lives.

I like to think of my journey since then, as “Joyful Paws.” You see, I paused (paws) long enough in my life to really give thought to what makes me most joyful. In turn, that has helped me to live with more purpose. And I happened to learn all of this because of a dog.

Shoshone.

How old is your pet?
One year old.

Where did you get your pet?
A breeder.

What is your pet's physical challenge?
Born with multiple eye deformities that can cause glaucoma. At the age of 4 months old, she got glaucoma in her left eye and it had to be removed to eliminate the pain she was having due to high eye pressure. No eye pressure eye drops would bring down the eye pressure so the eye had to be removed. She has the same problem in the right eye and at 6 months old she had a retinaplexy surgery done the the right eye to try to keep her retina from detaching. She will probably lose the right eye in the future. I am so devastated about this.

What is your pet's favorite thing to do?
She loves to play with her sisters, play with her toys and take long naps on her daddy or my recliner.

What is your pet's favorite thing to eat?
She loves her Benefil Chicken and Rice dog food, Milk Bone and chicken jerky treats.

What do you love most about your pet?
She is precious, with a wonderful zest for life and is so gentle and loving toward people and other animals.

What has your pet most taught you?
With all she has gone through, she is happy and full of life. She has taught me that even though she has disabilities she makes the most out of life and enjoy it to the fullest.

Anything else you’d like to share?
I just want to say that I love her with all my heart and will do anything I can for her to have a normal life, with some sight, for as long as I can.

Frankie meets therapy donkeys of Luv 'em All Donkey Farm

Recently my mom visited a very special farm with for miniature donkeys. They are all therapy donkeys owned by Susan and Brain Kilton. They invite special needs groups and the elderly to be with the donkeys. You can read a special story my mom wrote about the donkeys and the day a special needs group visited, "For the Love of Donkeys"

Today I got to meet the donkeys because I will be taking part in visiting some times when special needs groups and elderly come out the the farm. So not only will they meet donkeys, but they can meet me too! So here's a fun video of my first time meeting my new donkey friends.

From a well known Newfoundland breeder (Emmy Bruno)

She was born with a miniature front paw which was later reabsorbed into the wrist

What is your pet's favorite thing to do?
Laying on the fountain step with her sister Nana and watch people pass and bark at them if they get too near the gates, or sleeping on her back

What is your pet's favorite thing to eat?
Fish (she gets cod once or twice a week) and “cosine buone” (little treats)

What do you love most about your pet?
Her determination not to be left behind or excluded from anything, her courage and attachment to me and her sis.

What has your pet most taught you?
To be strong and fight when things get rough, never to give in, to love unconditionally.

Anything else you’d like to share?
She thinks she is a lap dog and now and then she half jumps on my knees when I am seated, wrap her only front paw around me and lays her head on my breast and just stays there, looking at me as if saying “I love you, Mom”
Half jumps means that she keeps her hind paws on the floor and only her trunk and big big head are resting on me.

Special Needs Pet: Maggie

What is your pet's name?
Maggie

How old is your pet?
She will be 2 years old on Sept. 21st

Where did you get your pet?
She was born here at my home from a littler of pups. I have both parents.

What is your pet's physical challenge?
Maggie is blind. I think some days (rarely) she can see shapes. It scares her terribly on days like that and she doesn't leave my side. But most days she sees nothing.

What is your pet's favorite thing to do?
Maggie's favorite thing to do is play in the water sprinkler when its hot. She also loves to cuddle and oh, belly rubs- can't forgot those.

What do you love most about your pet?
What I love about Maggie's is she is so sweet and ready to go and do anything with me despite her blindness. She's incredibly smart. She also gives the best kisses!

What has your pet most taught you?
I don't know if she has really taught me this but... Special needs dogs are just that, special. Everyone show open their home to a special dog. Her blindness has taught me to see things differently and how she adapts to things is amazing. She's always happy.

Anything else you'd like to share?

It took awhile to figure out that Maggie couldn't see. She was in a swarm of little black puppies. All rolling around and falling over etc. But it started to show when she would bump into the walls or fall in the food dishes as she got a little older.

I took her to the vet and they did a quick look and said "yup shes blind. Will you be putting her down?" NO! I WILL NOT!

My EX vet didn't even want to discuss what was wrong... They just dismissed her. ( I still do not know why shes blind, it really doesn't matter)

Maggie does perfectly well here with me and her parents and brother. She knows this house and yard, every inch of it. I keep the chairs pushed in and stuff out of the middle of the floor.... She has no problems. Her food and water are in the same place all the time, she goes right to it.

When we go outside she runs like the rest of the pack. Most people don't believe she is blind, and they wouldn't have known if I didn't tell them. If I think shes going to run into something I yell "CAREFUL" and she stops. "EASY" means slow down. I can direct her through the woods (we walk on the hill everyday) By telling her easy, over, wait for me etc.

If we are on a strange trail she stays next to me, Mica, Timber or One Ton.They all look out for her and will get between her and a bank or tree. Its truly amazing to watch those dogs watch out for her.

We do have a few issues we had to work around... (its not all easy) I have to watch out in the yard when the dogs are running. The others will swerve around me but Maggie has ran me over a couple times (clipped my legs as she goes by) Down I go. Then she comes back and kisses me cause shes sorry.

I wrapped my clothes line posts in snow fence in case she hits them. Its not pretty but it keeps her from getting hurt too much. We still get bumps and bruises some days but as she ages it doesn't happen so much anymore.

She is slow to make up to strangers. She does best if they don't try to touch her right away. But if given time to listen to them and be around them soon shes laying on the ground belly up "Rub my belly!"

Riding for the Animals: Motorcyclist To Complete Cross-Country Ride as Fundraiser for Rescued Animals

Saugerties, NY – August 13, 2011 - Avid motorcyclist David DiNicola of Middlefield, New York, will rev up his Harley Davidson from August 13-22 for The Strong in Spirit journey across the country to raise money for rescued animals.

DiNicola wanted to do something to honor the legacy of his late German Shepherd, KaDee, who brought so much joy to his life during her 16 years. “KaDee had such gumption for life – the same gumption that I see when I look into the eyes of rescued animals still waiting for their forever home,” said DiNicola who hopes to raise $100,000 to be split between two animal organizations: Catskill Animal Sanctuary and theBerkshire Humane Society.

The Berkshire Humane Society is where KaDee was adopted as a puppy and an organization that DiNicola has been involved with ever since. Catskill Animal Sanctuary, located in Saugerties, New York, rescues 12 species of farm animals from life or death situations. DiNicola first heard of Catskill Animal Sanctuary when he picked up a book, Where the Blind Horse Sings by Kathy Stevens, the sanctuary’s founder and director – the first book, he says, he has ever read from start to finish. The book compelled him to visit the sanctuary where he met numerous animals who changed his understanding about farm animals forever.

"Everyone can do something to make a difference. I am a motorcyclist, that's what I do; and I found a way to turn that into an opportunity to help animals who I deeply care about," said DiNicola. "You don't have to devote your life to a cause, but we all need to find something that grabs at our heart and then we need to find a way to help. This is my way." The grueling trip is 4,000 miles, and DiNicola will travel 10 states in 10 days.

I love his amazing spirit most of all. I’ve had him almost 2 weeks, and he has struck me deep in my heart with his amazing spirit. When he goes outside he is a changed man. He does everything a normal dog does, or at least he tries. He gets stuck sometimes, but a wave of the hand in front of his eyes and say come on My Lil’ Speed Racer and voila he’s off again. He makes me smile every time I take him outside to walk. I take him on a separate walk from the others cause he is slow, but the others don’t seem to mind when it’s his turn for his walk.

What has your pet most taught you?
It’s a toss up between patience, perseverance, and bravery.

Anything else you’d like to share?
Just that I am blessed to have him. I thought to myself after I committed to him “What have I gotten myself into?” thinking I was going to be spending all my time watching him to make sure he didn’t have potty accidents, etc…, but I couldn’t have been more wrong with the picture in my mind. He is easy to tell when he has to go potty, and if I happen to not catch his cue, that he needs to go he has yet to miss a potty pad since I’ve had him. He is an astounding baby, and I just wish everyone could experience the smiles he puts on my face every day watching him accomplish thing, after thing, after thing. He makes me so proud of him. I could go on forever here, so I will stop now before I just end up babbling.

Author Barbara Techel simply wants to uplift children through her books.

The self-proclaimed animal lover spent time on Friday at the Kress Family Branch Library in De Pere doing just that with her words — and with an adorable assist from her canine companion.

Frankie, an 11-year-old miniature dachshund, is the inspiration for Techel's series of children's books that promote positive attitudes. "Frankie the Walk 'N Roll Dog'' and "Frankie the Walk 'N Roll Therapy Dog Visits Libby's House,'' tell how the dog overcame a major medical challenge and has been spreading joy to others ever since.
"Frankie's story is so uplifting," said Techel, who lives in Elkhart Lake. "Even faced with a hardship, she has remained positive."
Five years ago, Frankie ruptured a disk in her back, leaving her confined to a dog cart. Not knowing how her dog was going to respond to being unable to walk on all four paws, Techel was pleasantly surprised at Frankie's willingness to continue as if nothing had happened.

"Frankie was really challenged as she was put into a wheelchair. Despite that, her spirits remained positive,'' she said.

Already an author by the time Frankie began to have medical problems, Techel was inspired by the dog to share her story through children's books. The two of them have made more than 300 visits to schools, libraries and organizations in Wisconsin to help encourage children and adults to overcome adversity.
After the reading at the library, there was a long line of children waiting to talk with Techel, purchase books, and of course, pet Frankie.

"I wanted to take Frankie home with me," said 7-year-old Venna VanRemortr. "It was really good."

VanRemortr and her older sister, Athena, come to the summer readings at the library with their grandmother Sybil Warner. This time, they say they were happy to be able to interact with the dog.

"We loved it," Warner said. "She was so articulate when reading, and it all flowed nicely."

In Memory of Savard, Therapy Dog Extraordinaire of HealthHeelers.com

My mom and I were very saddened to receive an email over the weekend from our friend, Laura, who is the founder and director of an extraordinary therapy dog company in Wisconsin called, Health Heelers. She started her work with therapy dogs because of her beloved Savard. He passed away on Monday, July 11th. Laura sent out this tribute about her amazing, beautiful boy and I asked her if we could share with our readers. She was honored, so I share her tribute below. Thank you, Savard for your dedication and love to so many... you will be very much missed.

Monday, July 11^th, 2011~ part of my spirit died that day . . .

Undoubtedly one of the most difficult days in my life, I said so-long to the most incredible creature I have ever had the honor to share life with; Savard, our beloved German Shepherd.

I owe Savard much credit for who I am and what I do; for it is because of Savard that I was able to create my passion in the form of Health Heelers.

Savard loved everybody and everything!

Unfortunately, Savard was a very misunderstood dog when he came into our home as an adopted, untrained juvenile in 1998. His delight and over exuberance for everything was a challenge! Could he ever become a therapy dog?!?!?! Fortunately, I consulted with some of the best in the dog behavior field including Suzanne Clothier, world-renowned behavior and German Shepherd expert. I learned that Savard’s behavior was out of sheer enthusiasm and zest for all that was good and all that he could make more joyful. Suzanne’s assessment made me realize how much more I needed to learn. My error inspired me to earn over 100 credit hours at seminars and workshops on dog behavior and dog training as I continue my quest for knowledge so that I may be a strong advocate for all of the therapy dogs in my programs.

Savard did become what I and many others consider a 'Master' therapy dog; unbelievably calm and incredibly steady & tolerant, and always with a smile for his ‘patient’. And it was Savard that made me realize the tremendous impact a dog like him, so full of joy and compassion, could make to people outside the walls of the health care facility where I’d started our first animal-assisted therapy program, because in 2005 Savard spent time entertaining children and comforting adults displaced to Wisconsin after they’d experienced the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina. Witnessing the “unweighting” that seemed to happen to them as a result of his presence, I began to think of more ways that I could use my education in Animal Assisted Therapy to bring the benefits of therapy animals to far more people than just those in health care institutions. Health Heelers became official that year.

Savard also had a great sense of humor! He knew how to make us laugh and smile. Throughout his life he frequently demonstrated his affinity for making arrangements out of the pet food dishes and toys~ dozens of them; and would even create arrangements when I asked him to!

Mostly though, my Joy Boy, Savard taught me how completely, fully and deeply creatures of two different species can care for, learn from, love and support one another to lead lives that provide service and compassion to others.

I know it’s an overused cliché, but Savard was truly my most special, one in a million dog. I will forever be grateful for all that he taught me and all that he gave. He was my heart.

What is your pets physical challenge?
Benny is now paralyzed from about the waste down. He uses a wheel chair to run around in and he also has a drag bag for when he is not in his wheels. His wheels I got from Eddie's Wheels. The Drag Bag was from Handicappedpets.com.

What is your pets favorite thing to do?
Play with his brother Canoli and his family.

What is your pets favorite thing to eat?
Pasta! Hey were Italian =)

What do you love most about your pet?
His will to live. He motovates me.

What has your pet most taught you?
How to be strong. That no matter what happens in your life that disables you. To keep going. Try harder. Never give up faith.
Anything else you'd like to share?
Alot of Dachshunds suffer from IVDD. They do not have homes or people to take care of them. Its very sad to see most people will just put the dog down when really they can live a happy healthy life. Just like anything its tuff at first but after you learn how to take care of them properly it's just like having a normal dog. The only difference is you have to assist them going to the bathroom which takes 5 minutes out of your time. With a normal dog you would still need to take those 5 minutes by walking him/her outside if not longer. The last thing would be putting him in his wheels to run around. For all you Doxie lovers out there give a Doxie with IVDD some care. =)

Where did you get your pet?

Several years ago we got a call from Ann, a vet tech from Dr. Roy’s Palm Beach Veterinary Specialists Clinic about a dachshund needing rescue because his owners were unable to finish his rehab because of health problems of their own. We were already fairly experienced with IVDD dogs, having experience with our Dahti & Chickie and unlimited help from people on the Dodgerslist forums.

What is your pets physical challenge?

IVDD, a disc disease common to dachshunds.

What is your pets favorite thing to do?

Sleep & Eat. Peanut is retired here at our house along with our two other IVDD dachshunds Dahti & Chickie. He enjoys going outside and just sitting in his favorite spot and just watching the world go by.

What is your pets favorite thing to eat?

Peanut can be a little bit picky, but loves his little treats of pieces of pumpernickel bread.

What do you love most about your pet?

He is a happy-go-lucky little guy who has worked his way into our hearts.

What has your pet most taught you?

How to persevere. He doesn’t let his handicap get in his way.

Anything else you’d like to share?

When we got Peanut he was overweight, a little over 24lbs, way too much for a ‘tweenie’ dachshund. He was only two weeks post-op and still not able to use his back legs. We kept him on crate rest for another eight weeks, only allowed out to pee & poo and to get massage on his hind legs and hips. After the crate rest he began water therapy to strengthen his muscles. We also got his weight down to 18lbs. One day while drinking water he just stood up on his own! Peanut is never going to be 100%,he walks a little wobbly but sure can run when he wants to, especially when dinner is being served!

Special Needs Pet Feature of the Week: Chickie

What is your pets name?
Chickie

How old is your pet?
Approximately 13yrs old

Where did you get your pet?
We took her out of a bad situation after a friend called us about her needing rescue.

What is your pets physical challenge?
IVDD. Her back legs are paralyzed and she requires a cart to be mobile. Chickie does have bowel control but requires her bladder to be expressed several times a day and is diagnosed with chronic UTI which we monitor daily. Chickie did not always have IVDD, it came on her one day and even though she had surgery she never got the use of her hind legs again.

What is your pets favorite thing to do?
She loves to ‘boogie’, that is the code word we ask her if she wants to get in her cart and join the others.

What is your pets favorite thing to eat?
Anything & everything! We are talking about a dachshund!

What do you love most about your pet?
I can get her all set up in the chair with me and she starts to look around the room for one of her toys and I have to get them all one at a time until she decides which one she wants. It’s usually one of the last ones I bring. I often tell her she is ‘a ghra mo chroi’, which is Irish for ‘love of my heart’

What has your pet most taught you?
Commitment. We knew we were going to do whatever we had to do to give Chickie a decent quality of life. We have also learned how intelligent they can be when worked with. Oh, also how to clean up poop.

Anything else you’d like to share?
Chickie actually named herself. When we first got her she would follow my wife around always wanting to be picked up and held. So one day BJ picked up Pepper and asked her if she was ‘my little chick-a-dee’? Well, she got all excited so BJ asked her again and the same reaction! So that name stuck and she has been Chickie ever since that day. Chickie is also one of many little ambassadors for Dodgerslist, a website and support group for people with pets that suffer from IVDD. We incorporate her cart into her costumes to bring attention to her disability and show that many handicapped pets can have a decent quality of life. Many people remember her and tell us they look forward to what costume she will be wearing each Halloween.

How old is your pet?

6 years

Where did you get your pet?

I had a friend on a dachshund site that posted that she has made contact with an old high school friend in the New Orleans area, and that person had a “piebald” dachshund that she was going to have put to sleep because she couldn’t walk.

After much thought I decided that I would take the dog and rehab her so she would not have to be destroyed. When I finally saw pictures of her I realized immediately that she was a Double Dapple. Then kind of as an afterthought her old owner mentioned that she was also deaf. At that point it didn’t matter anyhow so I flew to New Orleans and brought her home to Montana with me.

I took her to my vet and after X-rays found out she was paralyzed due to blunt trauma or some kind of crushing force to her spine. Since I am a certified canine massage therapist I began a rigorous rehab program with her as she had been down for so long that she was way beyond the point that surgery could help.

She now can walk albeit wobbly. In the cold months she has some mobility issues and so we continue her rehab therapies as she needs them.

What is your pets physical challenge?

Mira is incontinent, deaf, and partially blind on top of her back issues.

What is your pets favorite thing to do?

Mira is a real cuddly snuggler, and she loves to run, romp and play with my other dogs. My favorite thing Mira does is what we call going psycho dog, when I vacuum the house the sound doesn’t bother her at all of course but I think she can feel the vibration because she will race around as fast as she can and then grab the closest stuffy toy she can and give it the old doxie death shake.

What is your pets favorite thing to eat?

Mira is a real cheese hound. If I go anywhere near the fridge she is right there hoping for a slice.

What do you love most about your pet?

I love Mira’s dedication, and her ability to love in spite of the abuse she suffered before she came to me.

What has your pet most taught you?

You can’t keep a good dog down. Her tenacity and determination to walk and be able to chase around and play with my dogs is amazing. I think much like most dogs Mira has no idea she has any handicaps and is just as active and playful as the rest of my gang.

Anything else you’d like to share?

Mira has been an inspiration to many in this area, and the funny thing is with the work I did with her I ended up becoming something of a downed doxie referral person with my vet. Thanks to Mira and her story no less than 6 doxies have been spared euthanasia after the dogs parents met her and heard her story.
